Ok, the name is more or less final. Maybe I’ll do something with the four names on the far right of the first picture, but I’m not sure yet. The logo’s really giving me hard time. Don’t know if I should use just type, something like with the spilt white over the type or something completely different, like a real logo with little or no type at all (for example a tipped over milk carton). Suggestions, comments, help! Please…

Iceland’s first post!
February 25, 2008 · 4 Comments
Hey guys, sorry for the silence from my part, I’ve just been busy writing my program for my upcoming masters project…you know how we despise writing(maybe I’m just speaking for myself….and my other personalities)! At Danmarks Desginskole we have to write this so called program for the project which is sort of just a extended description on how we’re going to execute the process (cause the process is more inportant than the result here…). I managed to put together a 25 page A5 booklet out of this and here are my results, I just handed it in today so I can’t change anything! haha. The thing is that in theory the text should be so good that it doesnt need any fancy layout, but in my case where the text is so crappy I had to weigh it up with a little graphics in stead.
The project is to republish a collection of Icelandic folk tales and legends(fairy tales) so that it both reintroduces these long lost stories to the younger generations as well as encourages them to read more…and STOP playing Wii!
Enough writing and more showing!

I wanted the program to look old because the result of the project should not. The drawings are from a 1974 version of the collection, I wish they were my own but…. The layout inside is just a very simple one with no photos, and I used Plantin regular, italic and bold italic – so it’s simple.
I’m probably gonna try and trow in some stuff on the project on a regular basis, think it could be good motivation for me, plus getting some critique : ) And I’ll try and start from now on to comment on your work as well, but so far you’ve been doing some excellent stuff all of you.
Peas all
Kári
p.s dunno why but my text seems to float underneath some stuff and dissapear…sorry : (

Bastei Font II
February 23, 2008 · 3 Comments
An update on the Font Design. After some talks with my teacher, we decided it’s best I start from scratch again as I hadn’t really sketched different designs in the beginning but just ‘drawn’ a more or less final style of letters. So here we go: the letters I was supposed to start out with – a, b, d, e, n, p. Tried out different things, not sure yet which direction exactly it’s going to be headin’. I’ve circled my favorites with a light pencil line, hope you can see it.

the poem poster… what do you say? i also changed the back of the cover. the quote: now left justfied and one point bigger than before. i also changed the last line. who needs display needs… esche you were right. it’s much nicer now. i tried that solution before but i just thought its not enough information for the customer…pfff. esche i’m still working on the inner envelopes. its really hard to find a satisfying solution.

i’m frustrated. i wanted to print tomorrow and time is running. my teacher likes the cover but he asked for the link and i think there is a link but not a really strong one. also sebastian asked if i couldnt do the inner envelope a bit more elegant which is true and i knew. now that it came from somebody else, i cant live with it anymore. so i’m working on it again. if you could tell me if you like those squares in the background would be great. i cant say it at the moment. i actually do really like them but i also thought they are far to big and may be look to import. to be or not to be? yes or no?
the discussion is reopened anyway so if you could give me some feedback for the back would be also nice. tried quite a lot stuff. is not really a nice thing to do. hate backside!

Demonstration Manual – Name
February 19, 2008 · 4 Comments
Ok, the Business Cards are on hold right now. The course is actually already over but will restart in April. If nothing happens I’m not going to continue working on it until then but spend all my time on this new big project ‘Demonstration Manual’. Besides Type Design it’s going to be the only thing that I’ll be working on until the end of March. The Brief: design a manual for a demonstration of your choice (for or against anything we want) including name, slogan, chant, the demonstration itself, banners, posters, other means of advertising, floats, information stands and a website. Most important thing though is the actual printed manual on how the demonstration should be executed. The manual should be for the demonstrators, the public as well as the city council.
My manual in particular isn’t gonna be for the city council as it is supposed to be more of an underground, half-illegal, rebellious group that develops and executes different kind of ‘alternative’ demonstrations depending on the purpose and client. So this group isn’t really for or against a specific thing but just tries to come up with creative solutions for demonstrations. Some of the keywords here are: provocation, agitation, humor, ridicule, confusion and shock. Combined with elements of surprise, civil disobedience, organized chaos and even a bit of vandalism. I’ll let you know what my first ideas for demonstrations sometimes later. So far it’s only about the name for the organization (see above).
I already presented the ideas today, got some feedback and also have some favorites. But yet again, second opinions would be nice. Also my prof suggested another direction I could go with the name, so these might not stay the only choices

Thats it. My three-piece suit. Here again the quote thats motivated me for that kind of appearance:
“I have pictured the creative process as something like two parts of the brain at work on a poem: Magenta, who is often skimpily dressed, comes up with all the wild ideas; and Max, who wears a three-piece suit, is in charge of qualitiy control.”
Still just a dummy and some little things, i just recognized, that should be changed. Also the paper is just a standard one. I’ve been to a print shop today. (I hate those fuckin leaflet-I-know-how-the-world-works-printerguys.) …finally just normal paper. Happy days. But 7 seven days to go and still hell a lot to do. cheerio guys!!!

Got up
Had shave
Did Times crossword
Had another shave.
the brief is to interpret one of his poems. i think its a humours one and it still doesnt bore me so i thought if you’ve read it and seen it once, you always remind it just by seeing the squares. may be i could also drop the figures. poem fontsize to big? as big as the name? would be 10pt.
so far…
Got up
did my toilet:
Washed
Shaved
Combed hair
My toilet looks much nicer now.

here we go. tried the black punctuation. I’m not sure about it, its probably to fidgety (learnd a new word
) . Just one slash is definitly better. love the white one with the hightlighted info. is still working to get the most important information, so maybe i’m gonna take this one. I’ll print them tomorrow and see how it looks like. may be the white font on the grey background is to hard to read. > more stuff is comin tonight! who needs to sleep…
